UMA-Based Femtocells on Trial

A femto frenzy continues to build in the market, as anyone on the floor of Mobile World Congress 2008 could see. Capitalizing on the excitement, two major players announced they would begin femtocell trials based on UMA technology.

First, O2 announced a femtocell system trial from NEC. The trial was announced for the UK, a hotbed of femtocell activities. This was on the heels of NEC announcing its own femtocell solution.

Then, Telia announced plans for a femtocell trial to complement its Home Free dual-mode handset service. Telia has been aggressively rolling out Home Free across Telia properties in Scandinavia and has used a UMA-based solution from Motorola for some time.

The rumor mills are busy, and it is expected we'll soon see more announcements like these as operators begin to see the clear advantages of UMA-enabled femtocell systems, e.g. fastest time to market, fastest time to standards, and robust, proven, investment protection for new FMC applications.
