Qualcomm, NXP Deliver 3G Platforms

UMA technology continues to evolve and add new supporters. In fact, some of the most exciting announcements at the Mobile World Congress 2008 were about platform support for UMA-enabled 3G/2G/Wi-Fi handsets.

NXPFirst, NXP, a long-time proponent of UMA-enabled platforms, announced support for UMA on its 3G/UMTS Nexperia product line. NXP is a key supplier to dual-mode handset powerhouse Samsung; a good sign for those looking for imminent 3G/2G/Wi-Fi handsets. Qualcomm

Then, Qualcomm, a new entry to the UMA market, and Kineto teamed up to deliver a UMA-enabled version of Qualcomm's 72xx series 3G platform. Qualcomm’s 3G market position makes this a very strategic announcement, opening up the potential for UMA-enabled devices from many different handset manufacturers, including those previously not providing UMA-enabled dual-mode handsets.

“UMA as a technology addresses the needs of consumers and fits the strategy of many mobile operators. With commercial rollouts of UMA-based dual-mode handset services worldwide, operators and handset manufacturers are now focused on delivering UMA phones with 3G capability,” said Ton Van Kampen, vice president of business development for NXP.
