T-Mobile Goes VoIP
T-Mobile USA continues to be at the forefront of emerging mobile technologies. Last year, it was among the first mobile operators to launch a UMA-based dual-mode handset (DMH) service, HotSpot @Home.
Now, T-Mobile has announced a new “Talk Forever” fixed-line home phone service that uses its existing UMA network infrastructure to provide fixed-line VoIP service in the home.
T-Mobile now offers a lot of calling for very little money. With a $40/month mobile plan (which offers 1,000 mobile minutes, plus unlimited nights/weekends), subscribers can add unlimited calling from home on a "Talk Forever" terminal adaptor for just $10/month. The service will be open to any T-Mobile subscriber.
This is in addition to the existing HotSpot @Home dual-mode handset (DMH) service offer which provides unlimited calling from a UMA-enabled dual-mode phone over Wi-Fi (home, office, international) for $10/month.
Talk Forever is available today to wireless subscribers in the Seattle, Washington, and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, areas. Industry watchers expect T-Mobile to roll the service out nationally before the end of the year.
As reported by WIRED, David Beigie, T-Mobile's vice president of marketing, said the company's UMA-based HotSpot @Home service has "blown away internal estimates." With its aggressive new services, it looks like T-Mobile is going to make new records.
