NEC Steps Up to the Femtocell Plate

NEC Corporation (NEC) has stepped up to the proverbial femtocell plate in more ways than one. NEC and Kineto Wireless have submitted a joint proposal to the 3GPP standards body that would enable the mobile industry to quickly define a standard to support femtocell deployment.

NEC The proposal is based on the existing 3GPP GAN (Generic Access Network) standard and has been contributed as part of a femtocell study currently in progress.

“The mobile operator community has made it clear that a fully defined Iu-over-IP interface standard must be in place for the femtocell market to achieve mass market success,” said Anil Kohli, Director - Global Femto Competence Centre for NEC Europe Ltd. “With three years of real world experience supporting large scale dual-mode handset services, the 3GPP GAN standard presents an ideal path for rapid femtocell standardization.”

NEC also recently announced it has kicked off operator lab and friendly user trials of its femtocell solution in Europe and other parts of the world.
