Fido UNO Service Brings UMA to Canada
Fido, a brand within Canada's Rogers Wireless, has launched its UMA service, UNO. Fido customers can take advantage of having one phone, one bill and one phone number when they make and receive unlimited local calls from home, without using the minutes in their monthly plan.
Fido's UNO was launched with two price plans. A $15-per-month-option gives subscribers unlimited local calling from home; for $20 per month, subscribers can get unlimited Canadian long-distance when calling from home. Currently, the service is offered with a Nokia 6301 candybar phone , and more devices will be added to the plan later. With all the UMA-enabled dual-mode handsets available today, this shouldn't be a problem.
Subscribers can use any wireless router, or they can get a Fido UNO router, with settings maximized to get the most from the service and the phone. The company will offer rebates to cover the initial cost of the Fido router.
“"For teenagers, students and young adults, a cell phone is their primary phone," said Rogers' Chief Marketing Officer John Boynton. "Since about 30% of cell phone calls are done at home, this is a way to save about $35 per month by eliminating the need for a home phone if its not being used."
