Alcatel-Lucent's UMA (GAN) solution is based on the open specifications that are being jointly developed by a number of wireless industry leaders to encourage the widespread adoption of UMA technology. These specifications define a new functional entity, the UMA network controller (UNC), which interfaces between UMA-enabled mobile devices within the range of the unlicensed mobile access network and the core mobile network:
- Through A interfaces for circuit-switched interfaces to the core mobile network
- Through Gb interfaces for packet-switched interfaces to the core mobile network
- Through Up interfaces across IPSec tunnels in the IP access network to mobile devices in the unlicensed mobile access network
- Through Wm interfaces to a 3GPP authentication, authorization, and accounting
(AAA) server
Alcatel-Lucent's UMA (GAN) solution is available in two architectures to ensure that it can be cost-effectively integrated into both legacy core networks and mobile next generation
networks (NGNs):
The standalone UMA architecture is targeted at operators who have not implemented Alcatel's NGN solution. It is composed of a UNC interfacing with the core network through A and Gb standard interfaces. If the operator later decides to implement Alcatel's NGN solution, the standalone UMA architecture can be easily evolved to the combined NGN-UMA architecture.
The combined NGN-UMA architecture is targeted at operators who have implemented Alcatel's NGN solution. When coupled with Alcatel's industry-leading mobile NGN solution based on the Alcatel 5020 Wireless Call Server (WCS), Alcatel's combined NGN-UMA solution provides mobile operators with an optimized solution that fully reuses the existing transcoding capability of the core network.
Both UMA architectures are composed of the products listed below:
UNC functionality provided by the:
- Alcatel 5020 Wireless Call Server (WCS) for voice signaling support
- Alcatel Wireless Media Gateway (WMG) (either 7540 or 7570) for voice bearer support
- Alcatel 1000 Wireless IP Network Controller (WNC), also known as the GPRS Gateway, for packet signaling and bearer support
- Security Gateway (OEM product)
Alcatel 1430 Home Subscriber Server (HSS) as the UMA database and the 3GPP AAA server.
Alcatel 1300 Operation & Maintenance Center - Core Network (OMC-CN) as the Operation and Maintenance Center for the UMA network and for Alcatel Core Mobile Network solutions.
Figure 1: Alcatel-Lucent Standalone UMA Architecture
In the standalone UMA architecture, the hardware and the software on the Alcatel 5020 WCS and the Alcatel WMG support only the UMA functionality.
Figure 2: Alcatel-Lucent Combined NGN-UMA Architecture
A key differentiator for the combined NGN-UMA architecture is that the hardware and the software for the Call Server and Media Gateway support the UMA functionality in addition to their existing GSM functionality.
