UMA Advantages

Developed by leading mobile operators and vendors, the 3GPP UMA standard delivers a number of key service advantages.

UMA Feature Operator Advantage
Scalable, secure access to mobile services over IP access networks With UMA, mobile operators can allow millions of subscribers to securely access the core service network over an IP access network, including the Internet.
Full-service transparency With UMA, subscribers have seamless access to all circuit, packet and IMS-based services. All services available over GSM/UMTS networks are available over IP access networks via UMA.
Seamless mobility between networks For dual-mode handsets, UMA enables seamless mobility between cellular and IP access networks, providing true voice call and data session continuity.
Leverages existing/future core network investment The UMA Network Controller (UNC) interfaces with existing mobile core networks through well defined, standard interfaces, minimizing network disruption.
Supports all broadband access technologies UMA is designed to operate over any broadband IP access connection (e.g. DSL, cable, T1/E1,...) and not require a mobile operator to have a relationship with a broadband access provider.
Supports all IP wireless technologies UMA is an IP layer solution and does not impact the physical radio access layer. UMA runs transparently over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or even next generation wireless IP technologies such as WiMax.
Supports all WLAN environments With UMA, operators can provide dual-mode handset services in any WLAN environment: home, office, hotspot, coffee shop, campus and airport.
